On 16th July, in Brussels, M. Giovanni De Santi, Director of the Joint Research Center (JRC) Institute for Energy and Transport and M. Jean-Luc di Paola-Galloni, Acting chairman of the European Green Vehicles Initiative Association (EGVIA) signed a Collaboration Agreement aiming at developing harmonised methodologies for testing batteries for electric vehicles. EGVIA and the JRC will cooperate in the field of pre-normative research and the development of fit-for-purpose testing methods for the performance and safety assessment of batteries for electric vehicles.
EGVIA is an international association gathering 82 members (industry and research providers) from the automotive sector. Since 2013, EGVIA is engaged in the contractual public private partnership European Green Vehicles Initiative (EGVI PPP) with the European Commission. The EGVI cPPP aims at accelerating the transition to a greener road transport and boosting the innovative strengths and competitiveness of the European economy by focusing on technologies enabling the energy efficiency of vehicles using alternative powertrains.
As the Commission's in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre's mission is to provide EU policies with independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support throughout the whole policy cycle. Through its Institute for Energy and Transport in Petten, the JRC conducts research in the field of battery energy storage testing with a focus on the assessment of performance and safety of batteries for electric vehicles.
