The peace process in Colombia received the full support of the European Parliament today. MEPs called for the conclusion of negotiations as soon as possible and offered the aid of the European Parliament to reach the implementation of the final peace agreement; an EPP Group initiative.
The Resolution supports the agreements reached by the Colombian government so far. All the parties involved in the peace process have promoted an historical agreement whose main achievements include the acknowledgment of the victims, the promotion of justice without impunity and the true repair of the damage.
Luis de Grandes MEP, EPP Group Spokesman in the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly and Chairman of the Andean Delegation, outlined that the European Parliament has shown unanimity of its approval by taking on a Joint Resolution formed by seven political groups who have expressed their full "commitment" to Colombia. He praised the role played by Colombian society and noted that: "democracy came into force in this country a long time ago."
He recalled that "other Presidents, such as Betancur, Gaviria, Pastrana, and Uribe have also tried. Yet, we believe that history will place President Santos on a pedestal if he reaches this national engagement".
Regarding the peace process, de Grandes underlined the importance of creating a justice system without impunity, but with equity and solidarity.
The Spanish MEP stressed that the peace process agenda is mostly being fulfilled, with matters such as political participation, ending the conflict - scheduled for March 2016 - solving the problem of illicit drugs, and the establishment of an equitable justice system.
De Grandes highlighted the importance of the EU to create a fund which will address the post-conflict situation and will allow for the good development of the peace agreements.
