Brussels, 30 October 2020 – Yesterday, European Aluminium’s members have re-elected Emilio Braghi, President Novelis Europe, as Chair of their association at a virtual General Assembly. European Aluminium also welcomed two new members this year, taking the association’s total membership to over 85 membersrepresenting 600 plants in 30 European countries.

“I am grateful to my colleagues for their confidence during this critical time for our industry. I aspire to be a strong ambassador for the entire value chain and help secure adequate support measures for our industry to recover from the corona crisis and set the right conditions for fostering the production of sustainable aluminium in Europe,” says Braghi. “I’m especially looking forward to the mid-term review of our industry’s sustainability roadmap to assess progress made and redefine our ambitions in the light of the Green Deal,” Braghi concludes.

European Aluminium also elected Philip Schlüter, CEO of TRIMET, as its new Vice-Chair. Ingrid Jörg, President of Constellium’s Aerospace and Transportation business, Arnaud de Weert, CEO at ALVANCE Aluminium Group, and Gerald Mayer, CEO of AMAG Austria Metall AG, are new to the 12 member Executive Committee of European Aluminium.

During the General Assembly, European Aluminium also introduced two new companies. Grupo Baux, a manufacturer of aluminium flat-rolled products based in Spain and Aughinish Alumina, Europe’s largest alumina refinery based in Ireland.

“We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Committee members and two new companies, bringing a wealth of expertise to the table. European Aluminium has never been stronger and more representative of the value chain than it is today, allowing us to speak with one voice and enhancing our leadership on a range of issues that matter most to our industry,” says Gerd Götz, Director General of European Aluminium. “We will continue addressing the need for stronger trade defence to tackle subsidised Chinese overcapacity and for adequate compensation to protect aluminium producers from carbon leakage whilst greening our economy.”
