ANEC nominations for MEP Awards

Who do we think has done most for consumers over the past 12 months?

ANEC is pleased to nominate jointly Christel Schaldemose and Edvard Kožušník for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Award, in the 2011 MEP awards organised by the Parliament Magazine1.

Edvard Kožušník (ECR) was Rapporteur for the IMCO Report on the future of European standardisation, leading to the Parliament’s Resolution of 21 October 20102. His report noted the need to strengthen the role of societal stakeholders - and notably consumers - in the evolution of the European standardisation process, particularly as the Single Market Act foresees a broadening of the use of (privately-developed) European standards in supporting European legislation and public policies.

Christel Schaldemose (S&D) was Rapporteur for the IMCO Report on the revision of the General Product Safety Directive and market surveillance, leading to the Parliament’s Resolution of 8 March 20113. Her report was the first to recognise the need to provide a European framework for the co-ordination of national market surveillance activities in the enforcement of European legislation and European standards. No matter how good a law or standard in offering better protection or welfare to consumers, it is worthless without effective enforcement.
