CENELEC and the USB Implementers Forum reach agreement on memorandum of understanding

Brussels (1 March 2011) – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) and CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization.

This Memorandum aims at ensuring the possibility for CENELEC to make reference to USB technology in its European Standard EN62684:2010 and the commitment of the USB-IF to grant download access to USB technical specifications free of charge and at any time to manufacturers implementing this European Standard.

The successful European Standard EN 62684:2010 “Interoperability specifications of common external power supply (EPS) for use with data-enabled mobile telephones” specifies the common charging capability and interface requirements for external power supplies to be used with data enabled mobile phones. This interface is largely based on USB specifications with some additions particularly required for operation with touch telephones.

CENELEC and the USB-IF have a mutual interest in the recognition of EN 62684:20 and other possible standards relating to battery charging and e-waste.

CENELEC proposes, adopts and publishes European Standards and other technical publications at European level for products and services brought on the European market as officially recognized by the European Union under EC Directive 98/34 (22 June 1998). The mission of the USB-IF is to facilitate the development of high-quality compatible USB peripherals or devices, and promote the benefits of USB. The USB-IF makes publicly available its technical specifications by publishing them on its website (www.usb.org).

The MoU between CENELEC and the USB-IF intends to establish an ongoing relationship and will guide them in future cooperation with regards to technical specifications and coordination in the field of standards.

“The USB-IF and CENELEC share the same goal of providing consumers with an easy-to-use, ubiquitous and efficient industry standard solution,” said Jeff Ravencraft, President & COO, USB-IF. “Micro-USB supports both data transfer and power charging, and by standardizing on a single interface we are supporting the global green initiative for a common mobile charger. We are pleased to partner with CENELEC in its plans to include the Micro-USB specification in its standardization efforts.”
