Yerevan (AM), 23rd September 2010
Assembly of European Regions (AER) President Ms Michèle SABBAN, following the invitation of the Minister of Territorial Administration of Armenia, visited this week Armenia. She met regional political representatives and leading stakeholders at the national level.
Ms. SABBAN presented the AER’s activities to regional representatives, who showed strong interest in their European counterparts’ experiences. Several regional governors have henceforth expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation between Armenian regions and Europe, mainly via their forthcoming membership in the AER. It was indeed decided that an Armenian delegation would attend the AER General Assembly on the 11 and 12 of November in Istanbul, in order to become familiar with its activities.
AER President also met the President of the Armenian National Assembly, Mr. Hovik ABRAHAMYAN. On the bounce of their meeting, they decided that the next summit regarding the Black Sea issues would be hosted in Yerevan. Mr. ABRAHAMYAN pledged to support this initiative. This summit, to be held in the first quarter of 2011, will be devoted to water and tourism issues in this area.
During her official visit, Michèle SABBAN took part in official celebrations to mark the 19 years of Armenian independence. She finally had the opportunity to greet, on behalf of AER, President of Armenia Mr Serge SARGSIAN.
The Assembly of European Regions (AER) is the largest independent network of regions in wider Europe. Bringing together more than 270 regions from 33 countries and 16 interregional organisations, AER is the political voice of its members and a forum for interregional co-operation.
