S&D Group drives EU's efforts to cut harmful emissions by 500 million tons of CO2 by 2050

Tomorrow, the European Parliament is set to approve provisional agreements with the European Council on two regulations aimed at significantly reducing emissions from fluorinated gases (F-gases) and ozone-depleting substances - important contributors to the climate crisis.

The S&D Group at the beginning of this mandate played a central role in ensuring the inclusion of these vital legislations within the Fit for 55 package, which is designed to help the European Union meet its 2030 climate target, as these emissions are particularly harmful.

In December 2023, new technical and construction-related criteria for circular economy (“Environmental Delegated Act”) under the Taxonomy for sustainable activities have entered into force.

These criteria have been applicable in the 27 Member States since 1st January 2024. The EU's sustainable finance agenda has achieved another important milestone with the entry into force of these new criteria.

This failure comes after a historic political agreement on a landmark EU law on platform workers was reached during marathon negotiations at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the 13th of December 2023.
