S&Ds applaud a ground-breaking deal on EU anti-money laundering law

The Socialists and Democrats applaud a ground-breaking deal on a new EU anti-money laundering law reached last night by the European Parliament and EU member states. Under S&D Group leadership, this new legislative package will significantly change the rules of the game and help prevent scandals that we have witnessed way too often in the past years.

As Serbs once again take to the streets, S&Ds continue to urge investigation into election fraud claims

Today, the European Parliament debates the dire situation in Serbia after elections were marred by serious fraud claims. The Socialists and Democrats requested this discussion to call for an independent investigation into all reported irregularities and to support thousands of Serbs taking to the streets demanding justice, democracy and a European future.

The SHORE project launches its first open call with available grants for schools reaching up to 10,000€

The EU-funded SHORE project has launched its first open call on 17 January 2024 to fund school projects on ocean and water literacy with grants reaching up to 10,000€ per project.

We call on the remaining 10 member states to finally ratify the EU trade agreement with Canada

Six years after its provisional entrance into force, the outcome of the EU-Canada economic and trade agreement (CETA) is clearly positive for both the Union and Canada, with a significant increase in trade of goods and services. For example, exports of goods from the Union to Canada increased by 47% between 2017 and 2022. Besides, the European Commission estimates that almost 75,000 jobs depending on trade have been created since CETA came into force.

NO to austerity, YES to investments - S&Ds set to fight for progressive new EU fiscal rules

The Socialists and Democrats are determined to fight for progressive new EU fiscal rules. Today, the European Parliament is expected to give its green light to start negotiations with EU member states and the Commission on the long-awaited and much-needed reform of these rules. The Parliament’s position has a strong social democratic imprint. 

Iratxe García: “We expect the Belgian Presidency to deliver, including on the Green Deal

During a plenary debate today, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats, Iratxe García Pérez, welcomed the new Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, and she put forward the priorities of the S&D Group for the months ahead.

Iratxe García Pérez said:

“The Belgian Presidency cannot just be a transitional Presidency. In the run-up to the next European elections, our citizens need further steps to guarantee progress.

Thanks to the S&Ds, consumers will be better protected against greenwashing and early obsolescence

On Wednesday 17 January, the European Parliament will adopt a set of rules to ban misleading claims and greenwashing to protect consumers.

Consumers today consider the environment when making a purchase. With this new law, the S&Ds achieved an excellent deal to protect consumers against unfair practices, such as greenwashing or early obsolescence. 

Small investors get better protection through revised EU law on financial markets

The revised EU legislation on markets in financial instruments will significantly improve protection of small investors, underline the Socialists and Democrats while welcoming the new rules that are set to be endorsed by the European Parliament on Tuesday.

Eero Heinäluoma, S&D negotiator on the revision of the EU legislation on markets in financial instruments, said:

Strengthen the European labour watchdog to ensure protection of all workers, urge S&Ds

As we approach the fifth anniversary of the European Labour Authority, also known as ELA, it is clear that this agency needs to be strengthened to ensure genuine protection of all workers in the European Union, third-country nationals included, urge the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.
