Digital Europe Programme: “We want to take Europe to the digital top” say S&Ds

The EU now has the ability to increase its global competitiveness in the digital field, and to develop its strategic digital capacities. The Socialists and Democrats fought hard for proper financing for the Digital Europe Programme, linked to the Union’s seven-year budget and in line with our climate targets, and the European Parliament has today confirmed the final version.

Carlos Zorrinho MEP, S&D negotiator on the file, said:

At last a European rail transport system with a human face, where passengers’ rights are respected

At last we will have a European Rail transport system with a human face, where all travellers, including people with reduced mobility, will have the right to be assisted and protected in case of delays, cancellations or discrimination. This was our goal as progressives and we are proud to have worked to make this happen all across Europe.

The rapporteur and S&D MEP, Bogusław Liberadzki, stated:

EU must a adopt a new Russia strategy that would include a clear price for threats to security in Europe

With the support of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament is set to adopt a resolution strongly condemning Russia’s continued interference, their ever more aggressive disinformation campaigns and the gross violations of international law that threaten security and stability in Europe, particularly through their aggression and continued destabilisation of Ukraine as demonstrated by the recent military build-up.

S&D MEPs reaffirm their support for the Colombian Peace Agreement

Speaking at a debate in the European Parliament, S&D MEPs raised the alarm on the very worrying and dangerous situation many human rights and environmental defenders are confronted with, and called on the government of Colombia to guarantee their safety. In a resolution approved today, the European Parliament reiterated its full support for the Peace Agreement in Colombia, which five years ago put an end to a conflict that ravaged the country for 50 years, claimed more than 240,000 victims and left 100,000 people still unaccounted for today.

Time to act on digital taxation and a global minimum effective tax rate, say S&Ds urging EU leaders to back Biden’s push

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are pushing for the fair taxation of digital giants and an ambitious minimum effective tax rate ahead of a crucial G20 meeting* in June this year. For many years, the S&D Group has led the drive in the European Parliament for an effective minimum tax rate and has now managed for the first time to anchor this demand in a parliamentary report backed by a cross-party majority.

Niels Fuglsang, S&D MEP responsible for digital taxation, said:

If we want to protect our health and environment, the EU must ensure a common legal protection of soils

We strike back. After the Commission withdrew its previous proposal for a framework directive in 2014, and after 8 years of blockage in the Council, the European Parliament has voted and approved a resolution calling to finally ensure an EU-wide legal framework for the protection of soils, such as it exists for air or water.

The rapporteur of the resolution and S&D MEP, Maria Arena, commented:

Safeguards in new terrorist content online rules will protect freedom of expression

MEPs are today approving new EU rules to help fight the spread of terrorist content online while safeguarding freedom of expression and freedom of information. The new rules give authorities in EU member states the ability to make sure hosting service providers like Google or Facebook remove online terrorist content as quickly as possible.
