S&Ds green-light money for research and innovation over the next seven years

€95.517 billion is now available to fund important research across the EU. The Horizon Europe programme has just received the green light from the European Parliament, led by the Socialists and Democrats. Investing in research and innovation will help Europe compete on a global scale and preserve the EU’s social model.

Dan Nica MEP, S&D spokesperson on research and negotiator on the file, said:

A stronger EU Civil Protection Mechanism to make EU’s response to future crises stronger

Solidarity is the Key. The idea itself of the European Union is based on solidarity, and solidarity is the compass that will reinforce the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). Whether it is a natural disaster or a pandemic, the EU must be able to be prepared and respond effectively and timely, especially when it comes to cross-border risks. The UCPM was already instrumental in the Union’s response to the pandemic, providing repatriation of EU citizens and helping the distribution of medical supplies such as ventilators and personal protective equipment.

EU maritime transport sector must be more sustainable and contribute to the Green Deal

The European maritime transport sector plays a huge role in the EU’s economy. Hence, it should also play a leading role in contributing to the Green Deal and the efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Now it is time to end child poverty at Porto Social Summit

With one in five children at risk of poverty in the EU, S&D Euro MPs will, in a debate this evening in the European Parliament, call on EU leaders to make a commitment at next week’s summit in Porto to end child poverty.  The Socialists and Democrats demand a dedicated €20 billion to ensure decent housing and adequate nutrition, as well as free, quality education, childcare and healthcare for all children.

THE “CANCER SURVIVORSHIP – AI FOR WELL-BEING” CLUSTER IS BORN

It will boost the adoption of best practices of participatory research in Artificial Intelligence for healthcare and well-being for the benefit of EU citizens.

In April 2021, five EU-funded projects focused on healthcare and well-being, led by the FAITH project, formed a cluster with the aim of helping each other to collect, share, and understand early feedback from end-users on the solutions they are developing.

"Global supply chains have proven their worth"

The new European industrial strategy emphasizes the importance of open markets and global partnerships. This is the right way to go. This is because the approach of strategic autonomy, which the EU Commission originally sought, would slow down the transformation to sustainability.

S&D MEPs reaffirm their support for the Colombian Peace Agreement

Speaking at a debate in the European Parliament, S&D MEPs raised the alarm on the very worrying and dangerous situation many human rights and environmental defenders are confronted with, and called on the government of Colombia to guarantee their safety. In a resolution approved today, the European Parliament reiterated its full support for the Peace Agreement in Colombia, which five years ago put an end to a conflict that ravaged the country for 50 years, claimed more than 240,000 victims and left 100,000 people still unaccounted for today.

Time to act on digital taxation and a global minimum effective tax rate, say S&Ds urging EU leaders to back Biden’s push

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are pushing for the fair taxation of digital giants and an ambitious minimum effective tax rate ahead of a crucial G20 meeting* in June this year. For many years, the S&D Group has led the drive in the European Parliament for an effective minimum tax rate and has now managed for the first time to anchor this demand in a parliamentary report backed by a cross-party majority.

Niels Fuglsang, S&D MEP responsible for digital taxation, said:

Progressives kick off the debate on the Conference on the Future of Europe with an event in Rome on 3 May - #Progressives4Europe

The future of Europe is now in our hands! In view of the upcoming Conference on the Future of Europe, the European progressives have decided to launch a high-level pan-European initiative in Rome on 3 May, where we will outline our ideas on how to reinforce and deepen European integration. The EU needs to take a big leap forward if we want to be ready to seize the next opportunities and tackle the possible challenges.
