Iratxe García to visit flood-affected areas of Thessaly, Greece, on Monday

The President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García, will visit the areas of Thessaly affected by the floods on Monday, September 18, together with the President of Pasok Kinal Nikos Androulakis and S&D MEP of Pasok Kinal Nikos Papandreou.
 
The delegation will examine and propose financial resources to address the impacts of the floods and the reconstruction of the affected regions.

S&Ds: Critical Raw Materials Act ensures access to resources from abroad and their substitution where possible

The Socialists and Democrats voted in favour of the Critical Raw Materials Act in the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg today. The final text includes provisions introduced by the S&D Group to ensure an uninterrupted supply of these crucial resources from third countries for the EU industry.

Following the decision of Tunisian authorities to refuse entrance to a Parliamentarian delegation of MEPs, S&D Group leader Iratxe García this morning will request a declaration of the European Parliament's Conference of presidents asking for the immediate suspension of the Memorandum of Understanding between the EU and Tunisia.

Despite the passage of anti-deforestation laws by the EU, the clearing of forests is set to continue apace with coffee companies not prepared to comply with the regulation, reveals the 2023 Coffee Barometer, an in-depth report on the state of sustainability in the coffee sector. Roughly 130.000 hectares of forest have been lost annually over the last 20 years due to land being cleared for coffee cultivation as farmers attempt to make ends meet. At the same time coffee income remains at or below the poverty line in eight of the ten largest coffee producing countries.

Single Market Emergency Instrument: workers’ rights will be preserved even in times of crisis, thanks to S&Ds

Today the European Parliament gave the greenlight for the creation of the Single Market Emergency Instrument (SMEI). The instrument aims at ensuring the free movement of goods, services, and people in the single market in the context of an emergency, like the one of the coronavirus pandemic.
