Brussels/Frankfurt, 9 September 2021 – Commenting on the discussions on European climate policy in the European Parliament, Thilo Brodtmann, VDMA Executive Director, says:

"We don't have too much time left to reach the climate targets. That's why it's good that MEPs are dealing with the roadmap directly after the political summer break. In addition to detailed discussions on the individual measures of the "Fit for 55" package, the European politicians must not lose sight of the big picture. After all, the climate package forms an overall unit and must be interlinked and coordinated in the upcoming legislative process.

However Europe cannot tackle the climate crisis alone! A strong climate policy in the EU must be combined with an active external climate policy that aims at a uniform global CO2 market.

The tangible reduction of greenhouse gas emissions can only be achieved in a global context and in close cooperation with industry. After all, Europe's economic stability is strongly based on the success of export-oriented industry, such as mechanical and plant engineering, which also contributes significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gases through its innovative, climate-friendly technologies.

Especially in the discussions on the new CO2 border adjustment mechanism, the EU must ensure that Europe remains globally competitive. MEPs should therefore urgently insist that any carbon border adjustment mechanism complies with World Trade Organisation rules. The climate solution technologies of mechanical engineering companies must continue to be able to be used worldwide without any problems."
