Brussels/Frankfurt, 13 July 2020 – Regarding the extension of the deadline for the installation of diesel engines in mobile machinery, Dr Bernd Scherer, Managing Director VDMA agricultural engineering, says:

“The EU Parliament has quite rightly extended the transitional periods for the installation and sale of machines under emission stage V with retroactive effect. This is a positive example of how politicians and authorities can act quickly and non-bureaucratically when it serves the cause.

The extension of the deadline offers machine manufacturers urgently needed planning security. Manufacturers do not now have to scrap thousands of engines, but are allowed to install them in tractors and machines and sell them for an additional year. The extension of the transition period means that not a single extra engine that does not yet comply with Stage V will be placed on the market. This is because these engines had to have been assembled by the end of 2018. The retroactive extension of the deadline not only prevented losses amounting to millions of euros.

This decision was also the only sensible way forward in terms of sustainability. The VDMA has been campaigning intensively for this extension for months.”
