"It was with great sadness we learnt of the death of Paweł Adamowicz, the mayor of Gdańsk, who was attacked yesterday at biggest Polish charity event to collect money for the benefit of the health system.

 

The longtime mayor of Gdańsk was widely respected for his humanitarian stance, and was a political figure who showed courage in defence of human rights, including the rights of migrants and the LGBTI community. Members of the S&D Group had a chance to exchange with him personally. Gdańsk, the city of Solidarność has lost a great democrat. Europe, Poland and Gdańsk mourn his loss. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
