Stability bonds: An option that must be further explored

Today, through a resolution, the European Parliament gave a first response to the official consultation launched by the European Commission last November 23rd 2011 on the "feasibility of introducing stability bonds". On the same topic, the EP has also decided to produce a report with more detailed recommendations on the Commission's work in producing a more concrete proposal in the future.

Greek and European crisis begs for root and branch change in EU policy

"The dramatic situation in Greece is a result of failed EU financial and economic policies, and will be aggravated by the Europe 2020 strategy", said Lothar Biskyduring this morning's debate on preparations for the forthcoming European Council. The results of these policies are seen in the worsening economic recession, a downturn in GDP not only in Greece but in other countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal too. "This policy has to be overturned," he said.

The European Parliament voted in favour today to extend the Food Distribution Programme in the EU to 2012 and 2013. The annual ceiling for food aid to the most needy is €500m per year. The EPP Group is a strong advocate of the programme, as the number of poor people in Europe has increased. Currently, thanks to food aid, nearly 18 million Europeans manage to make ends meet.

Kosovo - Counterproductive referendum is unnecessary provocation

Serb-dominated northern regions in Kosovo are holding a referendum on whether or not to recognise the Pristina-based government. Green foreign policy spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek, who is the European Parliament rapporteur/draftsperson on Kosovo, condemned the referendum stating:

Focus must be on small operators and communities in fisheries reform

 "Apart from its strategic importance and contribution to dietary needs, the fisheries sector is vital to the socio-economic well-being of many communities," said GUE/NGL MEP João Ferreira during a debate on the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in the European Parliament this morning.

 

ECAS demands a European Citizens' Charter

From 1 April 2012 European citizens with have a possibility to influence the decision making environment of the EU. To raise awareness about the use of European citizens’ initiatives and other tools they have at their disposal, ECAS has launched a new one stop shop website and will hold a major conference on ECIs with Democracy International on 20 March 2012.
One year before the European elections in 2014, the year will be an opportunity to encourage European citizens’ initiatives and to foster dialogue between the EU and its citizens.
