Single European patent: Karim hails major boost for inventors and innovation

 New inventions will soon be easier and cheaper to protect from copying thanks to proposals for a European Patent which was finally approved by MEPs in Strasbourg today.

The vote follows an astonishing 30 years of wrangling over detail, but was welcomed by Sajjad Karim, the lead Conservative MEP netotiating the package. He called it "a major advance for the intellectual-property rights of inventors, scientists and others at the cutting edge of technology and innovation".

European patent MEPs abdicate control over intellectual property to non-EU institution

 

The European Parliament today voted to adopt the unitary European patent. The Greens/EFA group has raised concerns about the legality of the proposal, as well as the decision to grant wide-ranging intellectual property powers to a non-EU institution, the European Patent Office (and Court). The group hit out at the vote, with Green legal affairs spokesperson Eva Lichtenberger stating:

Ahead of today's European Parliament vote on an EU free trade agreement (FTA) with Colombia and Peru, GUE/NGL MEPs set out their opposition to the FTA and will request for it to be sent back to parliament's trade committee.
