Patients lose out in disappointing medical devices vote

GUE/NGL MEP Alda Sousa has expressed her dissatisfaction following the voting behaviour of the majority of MEPs in the European Parliament which saw them reject measures seeking to enhance the safety of medical devices and ensure that member states apply existing EU safety rules consistently.

Alda Sousa commented: "The voting behaviour of the majority in Parliament has overturned important amendments that were achieved in the Environment Committee last month, but all is not lost."

MEPs vote for stricter regulation at EU level but fall short in key areas

MEPs back strong line to tackle misleading advertising

The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of Dutch GUE/NGL MEP Dennis de Jong's report on misleading advertising, backing the fight against acquisition fraud and putting pressure on Council and Commission to take prompt action.

New rules on ship recycling "not enough" to stop dangerous scrapping

New legislation on the scrapping of old EU registered ships voted through by MEPs today will not ensure an end to risky and polluting practices.

"This Regulation is lacking. For ship-owners it has always been the case that it is financially more interesting to ‘recycle’ ships in places where sound environmental and health safety standards are not respected. This Regulation will not solve the problem as there are no provisions for incentivising ship-owners to follow sound ship recycling practices," said GUE/NGL MEP Sabine Wils after the vote.

Member states attempt to blackmail European Parliament in budget negotiations

"We will not be blackmailed by the member state governments!" GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer said, condemning the European Council's approach to the EU amending budgets for 2013 and 2014 as well as the EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020.

MEPs back strict EU data protection rules

GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst has welcomed a key vote on new legislative proposals to overhaul EU data protection rules.

The European Parliament's civil liberties committee today approved EU rules on data protection that safeguard EU citizens' fundamental rights despite a massive lobbying campaign by big business. Based on this vote, Parliament can now enter into negotiations with Council.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights must be defended!

GUE/NGL MEPs have voiced their support for a report that seeks to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, ahead of a crucial plenary vote on the issue to be held tomorrow morning.

The group also calls on MEPs to reject anti-abortion group's calls for the dossier to be scrapped.

New Eurofound report evaluates potential impact of a coordinated EU minimum wage policy

(DUBLIN, IRELAND): Although minimum wages are set at national level and the EU has no competences on this matter, there is an on-going debate about the possibility of coordinating minimum wage policy across Member States, for instance by setting a common threshold of 60% of the median wage in each country. In the majority of EU Member States, minimum wages are set by government regulation. Germany together with Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Sweden are the exceptions. In these countries minimum wages are set by collective bargaining agreements.
