As floods, wildfires, and heatwaves batter Europe and the world, the need for urgent, united climate action has never been clearer. Ahead of the UN Climate Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, the European Parliament has adopted its position calling on the EU to lead a fair and ambitious global climate transition, combining science with solidarity.
COP30, taking place from 10 to 21 November 2025, will be the first major summit since the Global Stocktake – the world’s five-year check-up on climate progress – confirmed that the world is off track to meet the Paris Agreement goals.
The Parliament’s resolution, shaped with strong input from the S&D Group, urges the EU to set a new science-based climate target for 2040 and submit an ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2035, to ensure climate finance reaches those most affected, and to promote a just energy transition that protects workers, communities, and ecosystems. It also stresses that climate action must be linked to peace, stability, and human rights, recognising climate change as a global threat multiplier.
The S&D Group will send a delegation comprising Mohammed Chahim, Annalisa Corrado, and Heléne Fritzon to the Belém Climate Change Conference.
Annalisa Corrado, S&D rapporteur for the COP30 resolution, said:
"COP30 in Belém must mark a turning point for global climate justice and cooperation. The world needs not only greater ambition, but true fairness and solidarity – especially with developing countries, which bear the least responsibility for emissions yet face the harshest impacts of climate change.
"The EU must lead by example, aligning its 2035 and 2040 goals with the latest science, ensuring climate finance reaches those who need it most, and championing a transition that is just, inclusive, and rooted in human rights.
"Climate action is not just about cutting emissions; it is about safeguarding communities, building peace, and leaving future generations a planet they can actually live on. The reality is stark: there is no Planet B, and our time to act is running out."
