Frankfurt/Brussels, 22 February 2024 – The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) of the European Parliament votes on the provisional agreement of the Net-Zero Industry Act. Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the VDMA, comments:
- "The provisional agreement on the Net Zero Industry Act, which the ITRE Committee will adopt shortly, misses the opportunity to identify the industrial value chains that are essential for building the production of sustainable technologies in Europe. This is particularly true for mechanical and plant engineering."
- "Once again, companies are being burdened with bureaucracy: They have to prove the importance of machines needed for the production of Net-Zero-technologies on a case-by-case basis. This is another obstacle on the way to strengthening manufacturing capacities in Europe. Net-zero manufacturing technologies must be included in the further definition of the scope!"
- "The integration of additional (non-price) criteria into public contracts and auctions, for example the contribution to sustainability and resilience, appears to be a complex and administrative process. The details need to be defined in a streamlined and practical way."

VDMA represents more than 3600 German and European mechanical and plant engineering companies. The industry stands for innovation, export orientation and SMEs. The companies employ around 3 million people in the EU-27, more than 1.2 million of them in Germany alone. This makes mechanical and plant engineering the largest employer among the capital goods industries, both in the EU-27 and in Germany. In the European Union, it represents a turnover volume of an estimated 770 billion euros. Around 80 percent of the machinery sold in the EU comes from a manufacturing plant in the domestic market.
