The subcommittee has to bring its focus back to the core task of its work - human rights.
After the election, Udo Bullmann, Chair of the European Parliament’s subcommittee on human rights, said:
"Human rights are at the heart of the European Union and our common values in the European Parliament. In the face of multiplying global crises, human rights are under pressure worldwide, whether as a result of wars, such as Putin's invasion of Ukraine, or oppression by authoritarian regimes, such as in Iran. The flare-up of hunger in the Global South, inadequate healthcare, climate change, and the threat of destruction of the livelihoods of millions are additional challenges that threaten human rights worldwide.
“It is Europe's responsibility in the world to stand up for human rights. Unequivocally. The European Parliament's human rights subcommittee has a crucial part in this - as a voice and guardian for those who so urgently need Europe's help and solidarity. We will stand up for them with all our strength and conviction."
Udo Bullmann has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999. He was S&D Group leader in 2018-2019, SPD lead candidate for the 2019 elections together with the European Parliament’s Vice-President Katarina Barley, and head of the SPD Delegation in 2012-2017.
