Type approval of cars: control has to be European

"We have to address one of the worst failings of the current car certification system and I'm therefore happy to see that the European Commission has put forward a proposal to ensure the independence of certification services from manufacturers," says Françoise Grossetête MEP, Vice-Chairwoman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, in response to the presentation today by the European Commission of a proposal for the revision of the type approval legislation for motor vehicles.

The new proposal has to be seen in the light of the car emissions scandal that came after revelations last year that Volkswagen group had dodged the emission limit for diesel cars. An Inquiry Committee has been set to up by the European Parliament to identify responsibilities following the scandalous cheating at Volkswagen, but also to highlight solutions to prevent anything like that happening again.

The proposal presented today will solve some of the issues raised by the emissions fraud.

"I share the desire to strengthen market surveillance by enabling European supervision of car certification to ensure that European rules for safety, environmental protection and production are respected. Besides the independence of vehicle emissions tests and greater involvement of the European Parliament, it's also crucial that we have better exchange of information between national authorities," Françoise Grossetête says.
