Styrenics Circular Solutions appoints Secretary General for independent legal entity in a drive to maximise the circularity of styrenic products

  • Industry initiative Styrenics Circular Solutions is taking shape to drive circularity and resource efficiency for styrenic polymers
  • Styrenics Circular Solutions to be established as independent entity operating in close cooperation with PlasticsEurope
  • Jens Kathmann appointed Secretary General of Styrenics Circular Solutions to lead the value chain’s efforts in creating innovative recycling solutions for styrenic polymers

Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), the joint industry initiative to drive the shift to a more circular economy for styrenics, today announced its intent to form as a standalone legal entity. Jens Kathmann is appointed Secretary General for SCS as of 1 October 2018.

SCS was founded in 2017 to create a unified driving force behind a new and comprehensive approach to styrenics recycling through innovative technology and partner-driven solutions. It aims at strengthening the sustainability of styrenic polymers and accelerating the use of game-changing technologies that make polystyrene and EPS based products more fully and infinitely recyclable. These technologies will enable these products to be recycled and used again in their original applications, ultimately also in food contact applications. SCS is also mobilising waste collection and sorting partners to recover more polystyrene and EPS-based products for high-tech recycling processes.

SCS is currently hosted by PlasticsEurope with the intention of quickly establishing itself as a separate legal entity to facilitate the inclusion of all value chain partners. SCS strives to engage all participants in the value chain in maximising the circularity of styrenic products. This new entity will act as a platform to facilitate recycling projects across the styrenics value chain and will operate in close collaboration with PlasticsEurope and key partners across the waste management stream.
Press Release

In support of this mission, leading members of the European styrenics industry who have supported SCS since its founding, appointed Jens Kathmann as Secretary General for SCS. “I very much welcome this second step in the further development of SCS with the nomination of Jens Kathmann as Secretary General”, comments Karl-H. Foerster, Executive Director of PlasticsEurope. “I am confident that SCS will be an instrumental contributor to realising PlasticsEurope’s Voluntary Commitment to increase circularity and resource efficiency within Europe.”

“I am very excited to take on this new responsibility”, said Jens Kathmann upon his appointment. “Polystyrene has an unparalleled intrinsic capability for reuse as a true circular material when properly collected, sorted and recycled. SCS strives to engage further partners across the entire styrenics and waste management value chain, and in cooperation with other diverse stakeholders, we are strongly committed to moving the circular economy for styrenic polymers forward”, reaffirmed Jens.

Jens Kathmann, currently Vice President Standard Products EMEA for INEOS Styrolution, has 30 years of experience in the chemical industry through a variety of business. He carries comprehensive international business experience from having worked previously for BASF in several managerial assignments in marketing, sales and business management mostly in the field of styrenics, located in Singapore, Hong-Kong, India and Germany. Jens joined Styrolution on its founding in 2011.
