General Assembly of European Free Alliance-European Political Party in Katowice.

“We, from the European Free Alliance (EFA), came here to help Poland realize that it has nothing to be afraid of if it respects the rights of its citizens of Silesian origin and grants them the autonomy they desire and deserve.”

These words from the EFA President Francois Alfonsi summarise in the best possible way the goals of the EFA 15th General Assembly that started officially today in Katowice, Silesia.

Autonomy for Silesia, a long-standing request of the Silesian people that is still left unanswered by Warsaw, is in the main focus of the General Assembly that gathered more than 200 delegates, among them 5 Members of the European Parliament, from 21 different countries. They adopted a statement, asking the Polish state to finally comply with the fundamental right to self-determination as well as with European common practice and recognize its Silesian minority. At the same time Poland is urged to make concrete steps towards the decentralization of the state and re-granting autonomy to Silesia. The events take place under the slogan: “Autonomia to normalnosc- Silesia deserves autonomy ".

The delegates also discussed important issues for the future of the European Union as a whole such as Brexit, the refugee crisis, energy sovereignty and sustainable development and agreed that EFA should involve itself in these policy fields even more. This will also be reflected in the EFA Electoral Manifesto for the 2019 European Parliament elections, for which the first foundations have been laid in Katowice.

The General Assembly also approved the membership requests of the parties Oljka (Slovenian Istria), Inseme (Corsica) and Patrie Furlane (Friuli), thus raising the  overall number of EFA member parties to 49. A series of declarations and motions in support of the Sahrawi, Kurdish and Palestinian people, sustainable development, energy sovereignty and other issues of regional and European interest.
