S&D Group leader Udo Bullmann will travel to Ljubljana and Maribor in Slovenia to present the Progressive Society policy report on Sustainable Equality* at an event on Friday, March 5, together with S&D vice-president and Slovenian MEP Tanja Fajon. Bullmann and Fajon will also meet representatives of the Slovenian social democratic party and visit an urban laboratory for social innovation as well as a retirement home in Maribor.
Udo Bullmann stated:
“We come to Slovenia at a crucial moment in European history. Once again, there are political forces who advocate an agenda of chauvinism, nationalism and territorial revanchism. The recent unacceptable comments from Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament, on Istria and Dalmatia as well as on Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, which we strongly condemned, echo this deeply unsettling development. Europe was built as a stronghold against nationalism, and we will not allow anyone to turn back the wheel of time. This is why Europe needs to change its course fundamentally.
“A Europe of stagnation and social injustice, as embodied by conservative parties, plays into the hands of right-wing populists and nationalist. We offer a concrete roadmap for a social and ecological revolution, based on the 2030 United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. We want to create a truly fair economic, social and environmental model that will achieve decent living conditions for the many, not just the few, while respecting the natural boundaries of our planet. I am looking forward to presenting these ideas to the Slovenian people, as well as to listen and learn from their perspective on Europe. Together, we can show that a different Europe is possible.”
S&D vice-president Tanja Fajon said:
"I am glad to host my Group leader and dear friend Udo Bullmann in Slovenia. His visit is not only a sign of our good cooperation, but also of S&D's strong commitment to Slovenian social democracy.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to the obvious inefficiency of the model our societies are based on. We cannot expect to stop the spread of populism unless we fix the shortcomings of our societies: inequality, the lack of social and ecological sustainability and putting profit before people. Only when we offer a concrete plan, based on the values of social democracy and driven by a wish for a fairer model, can we win the hearts and minds of all those who now buy cheap populist tricks.
“I welcome the fact that the herald of progressive society and sustainable equality will be presented in the capital of Slovenia as well as in the second biggest town, Maribor. The voice of change should reach as many people as possible and I am particularly proud that this change is brought to Slovenia by the S&D family."
The debate on the Progressive Society report will take place from 17h to 19h in Maribor, Vetrinjski dvor (Vetrinjska ulica 30). Panelists: Udo Bullmann, S&D president; Tanja Fajon, vice-president of S&D and SD; Dr. Aleksander Jevsek, Mayor of the Municipality of Murska Sobota and Member of the Committee of the Regions as well as Žiga Čepe, a young climate activist.
*The report was put together by a group of independent experts under the lead of former Greek minister of Labour and the Economy Louka Katseli and former PES-President and Prime Minister of Denmark Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.

S&D predstavil načrt za trajnostno Evropo in Slovenijo
“V Slovenijo prihajamo v ključnem trenutku evropske zgodovine.
Podpredsednica S&D skupine Tanja Fajon:
Udeleženci omizja: Udo Bullmann, predsednik S&D skupine, Tanja Fajon, podpredsednica S&D skupine in podpredsednica SD, dr. Aleksander Jevšek, župan Murske Sobote in član Odbora regij, ter Žiga Čepe, mladi aktivist.
