Today the Socialists and Democrats in the all-party committee on the environment and health in the European Parliament voted on a resolution against placing three genetically modified organisms (a type of carnation and two types of maize) on the EU market.

Matthias Groote MEP, S&D spokesperson on the environment, food safety and public health, stated:

"Under no circumstances can we support the Commission's proposal to authorise these new GMOs that are resistant to certain herbicides.

"Today, we have taken the concerns of European citizens into account. According to a Eurobarometer survey on food technology, 58% of Europeans think that GMOs are not safe for future generations. Our main priority here is the health and safety of European citizens. Under no circumstances could the GMOs that are resistant to herbicides be authorised, as these could have negative environmental and health effects." 

S&D MEP responsible for this issue, Guillaume Balas, said:

"Last year a majority of MEPs voted for an amendment asking the Commission to reconsider its position concerning the process of placing GMOs on the market.

“The Commission is about to validate the placing on the market of a new glyphosate-resistant transgenic maize and an ornamental carnation containing a gene derived from an anti-diabetic substance.

“Our objective remains the same: no GMOs – especially those with resistance to herbicides – can be validated by the European Parliament until we have new rules about the process. With support from MEPs in five political groups, these objections are also a way to underline that the will of the Parliament must be respected in the institutional process. This is a question of transparency and democracy." 

Les eurodéputés S&D s'opposent à l'autorisation d'OGM et demandent des règles claires

Aujourd'hui, les Socialistes and Démocrates réunis au sein de la commission de l'environnement et la santé au Parlement européen ont voté contre une résolution autorisant trois OGM-organismes génétiquement modifiés-(un type d'œillet et deux types de maïs)  sur le marché européen.

Matthias Groote, eurodéputé S&D et porte-parole  à l'environnement , la sécurité alimentaire et la santé publique, a déclaré:

"Nous ne pouvons en aucun cas soutenir la proposition de la Commission qui autoriserait ces nouveaux OGM résistants à certains herbicides.

"Aujourd'hui, nous avons pris en compte les préoccupations des citoyens européens. Selon une enquête, Eurobaromètre sur la technologie alimentaire, 58% des Européens pensent que les OGM ne sont pas sûrs pour les générations futures. Notre priorité est la santé et la sécurité des citoyens européens. En aucun cas, les OGM résistants aux herbicides ne peuvent être autorisés, dans la mesure où ils pourraient avoir des effets néfastes sur l'environnement et la santé." 

Guillaume Balas, eurodéputé S&D responsable de ce dossier, a ajouté:

"Une majorité d'Eurodéputés a voté, l'an dernier, un amendement demandant à la Commission de revoir sa copie en ce qui concerne la mise sur le marché des OGM."

“La Commission doit valider la mise sur le marché d'un nouveau maïs transgénique résistant au glyphosate d'un œillet contenant un gène dérivé d'un antidiabétique.

“Notre objectif reste le même: pas de validation d'OGM par le Parlement, et particulièrement ceux résistants aux herbicides, tant que nous n'avons pas de nouvelles règles. Ces objections, soutenues par des représentants de cinq groupes politiques, sont aussi un moyen de souligner la nécessité de respecter la volonté du Parlement dans le processus institutionnel. C'est une question de transparence et de démocratie."
