Less than one hundred days away from the European elections of May 23-26, members of the Socialists and Democrats Group in European Parliament will be in Madrid, as of Thursday, to support the PES candidate to chair the next European Commission, Frans Timmermans, and to adopt the electoral Manifesto.

S&D leader Udo Bullmann said:
“We must change the course of the EU in the next term from 2019 to 2024. To that aim, our Group has made important contributions to the Manifesto. Based on our work and achievements in the Parliament over the last five years, we want a new governance built on a new Sustainable Development Pact.

“Madrid is the best place to launch this roadmap together with our candidate Frans Timmermans. The Spanish government led by Pedro Sánchez reflects our vision: on one hand, it includes true gender equality, and on the other hand, it has adopted a horizontal approach to all policies in order to ensure social, economic and environmental sustainability.

“Sánchez is showing that efficiency and coherence are possible if we want to re-empower people, re-shape capitalism and re-build social justice; and it should also be like that at the European level.”

Events:
The PES Congress will take place on Saturday 23rd, but S&D MEPs will participate in several events on the fringe and they will also engage in active discussions on the future of a progressive Europe with citizens.

On Thursday, Udo Bullmann will take part in a discussion organised by Fundación Alternativas on “A progressive vision for the future of Europe” along with the chair of the Spanish S&D delegation Iratxe García Pérez, and then they will also meet with young Europeans living in Madrid to hear their concerns and hopes for the next European elections.

On Friday, the Group will organise a workshop on the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda with the Spanish High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda Cristina Gallach, and other experts and practitioners. In the evening, Udo Bullmann will participate in the leaders’ dinner co-hosted by the S&D Group and by the Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez.

On Saturday morning, ahead of the official PES Congress, the S&D Bureau will exchange views with the Spanish minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera
