Following the historic result of the parliamentary elections in Malaysia, the S&D Group in the European Parliament congratulates the opposition alliance led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on their victory, which represents the first change in power since independence 61 years ago.
S&D vice-president Victor Boștinaru said:
“Voters clearly indicated they want a change. Now it is of the utmost importance for all sides to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition. We encourage the new government, once it is formed, to respond to the call of the Malaysian people for reforms, the fight against corruption, and the consolidation of democracy.”
The S&D Group is currently represented by MEP Peter Kouroumbashev in a mission undertaken in Malaysia by the European Parliament's delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and ASEAN.
