The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament today condemned the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, and asked the EU member states to strengthen co-operation and intelligence-sharing.

S&D president Gianni Pittella said:
 
“Once again, we are obliged to express our sorrow, our indignation and our anger in reaction to the events from yesterday’s bloody terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.
 
“Once again, we are here to reiterate our strongest willingness and commitment to fight back against terrorism and radicalization without giving up our values.
 
“Once again, however, we urge the member states to finally realize that the threat of terrorism cannot be eradicated without real co-operation and the exchange of information at the European level.
 
“Here Europe can really make the difference, but only if European leaders opened up their eyes to the facts. The setting up of a strong European FBI could really make the difference. This should be our common goal.

Iratxe García Pérez, head of the PSOE delegation to the European Parliament, said:
 
“We are deeply upset by this new brutal attack on an open and cosmopolitan city such as Barcelona, and on the coastal town of Cambrils. Now is the moment to stand up for the victims. However, terrorists must know that they will not defeat our values of freedom and democracy. On the contrary, this is the time for the unity of all democrats.
 
“This global terrorism hits all corners of the world. At this time of grief and shock we are grateful for all the sympathetic messages of solidarity; particularly those coming from our European partners. Together we will face this threat with police efficiency and the defence of our common values.”
 

Dirigentes del Grupo S&D piden unidad contra el terrorismo y un FBI europeo

El Grupo de Socialistas y Demócratas en el Parlamento Europeo ha condenado los atentados terroristas en Barcelona y en Cambrils y ha pedido a los Estados miembros que fortalezcan la cooperación y la inteligencia dentro de la UE.

El presidente del Grupo S&D en la Eurocámara ha afirmado:
 
“Otra vez, después de los atentados de ayer en Barcelona y en Cambrils, tenemos que expresar nuestro dolor, nuestra indignación, nuestra rabia”.
 
“Otra vez, estamos aquí para reiterar nuestra firme voluntad y compromiso para combatir el terrorismo y la radicalización, sin renunciar a nuestros valores”.
 
“Y otra vez urgimos a los Estados miembros a aceptar, de una vez, que la amenaza del terrorismo no puede erradicarse sin una cooperación real y el intercambio de información a nivel europeo”.
 
“Europa puede ser determinante en la respuesta, sólo si los líderes europeos abren los ojos. Establecer un FBI europeo potente podría realmente ser determinante. Este debería ser nuestro objetivo común”.

Iratxe García Pérez, jefa de la delegación del PSOE en el Parlamento Europeo, ha declarado:
 
“Estamos consternados por estos nuevos actos brutales contra una ciudad abierta y cosmopolita como es Barcelona, y después el ataque en el paseo marítimo de Cambrils. Hoy es un día para estar con las víctimas. Pero los terroristas deben saber que no conseguirán quebrar nuestros valores de libertad y de democracia. Al contrario, es el momento de la unidad de todos los demócratas.
 
“Es un terrorismo global, que golpea en cualquier rincón del mundo. En estos momentos de duelo y de desconcierto agradecemos todas las muestras de afecto y de solidaridad, especialmente de nuestros socios y amigos europeos. Juntos afrontaremos esta amenaza con eficacia policial y con la defensa de nuestros valores.”
