The fallout from the UK referendum and plans to revitalise the European project will be at the heart of high-level talks between S&D Group president Gianni Pittella, Portuguese prime minister António Costa and members of the government and parliament during a visit to Portugal on 1 July. In Lisbon, Pittella will meet Ferro Rodrigues, president of the assembly, and participate in a joint meeting with minister for home affairs Constança Urbano de Sousa, deputy minister Eduardo Cabrita and secretary of state for parliamentary affairs Pedro Nuno Santos to discuss the issue of refugees in particular.

A press point will be held at 10:45 in the guest room of the presidency in the national parliament, with Gianni Pittella, assembly president Ferro Rodrigues and Carlos Zorrinho, the president of the Portuguese socialist delegation in the S&D Group.

From 16:30 Gianni Pittella will be in Porto to take part in a special Relaunching Europe event with other leading S&D Euro MPs including Carlos Zorrinho and S&D vice-presidents Maria João Rodrigues and Marju Lauristin on the topic of ways to revive the European economy and fight unemployment after years of crisis. The event will take place at the Alfândega do Porto in the presence of prime minister António Costa, the mayor of Porto Rui Moreira and the president of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Carlos César.

The main topics will be ways to boost growth and create jobs in Europe, the development of progressive economic governance for the eurozone and a 'Marshall plan for young people', with expert contributions from the S&D Euro MPs and representatives from the academic world and civil society. The detailed programme is available here.

S&D Group leader Gianni Pittella and prime minister António Costa will make the closing statements. The event is open to the public and the press. It will be webstreamed on www.socialistsanddemocrats.eu and www.relaunchingeurope.eu.
