Yesterday, 13 Turkish soldiers were killed and 7 wounded in an ambush near Diyarbakir, reportedly set up by the PKK.

Ria Oomen-Ruijten: "I strongly condemn this attack and would like to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims."

In her reports Ria Oomen-Ruijten, rapporteur of the European Parliament for Turkey has always condemned the continuing violence by the PKK and other terrorist groups on Turkish soil. She also continues to encourage Turkey, the EU and its Member States to intensify their cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Ria Oomen-Ruijten: "I urge the newly elected BDP Members of Parliament to distance themselves from this unacceptable violent attack and call upon them to make a fresh start in the peace settlement. The only way forward is through political dialogue and concrete initiatives for reconciliation, and by addressing the Kurdish issue comprehensively with a view to reaching a peaceful solution."
