Press Briefing and Discussion:
Conflict Minerals: What next for a human-rights based European regulation

Wednesday, 22 June 2016, from 16:30 to 18:30
Place: European Parliament, ASP 1E1
Participants:
Marie Arena, member of the European Parliament (S&D),
Nele Meyer (Amnesty International) and experts.

On June 15 the European Parliament, the Commission and the Council reached a political agreement for a new European regulation aimed at eliminating conflict minerals (also called blood minerals) from the European market.

The Socialists and Democrats were the driving force behind the negotiation for a mandatory system. With the support of NGOs and public opinion, we managed to change the position of the Conservatives, the Commission and several member states.

But the struggle is not over: the political agreement needs to be translated into concrete action and more legislative steps should be taken in the future.

On June 22 MEP Marie Arena will debrief on the negotiations and upcoming steps, and experts will debate on the outcome and the pending challenges.
