Brussels, 15th October 2009 - The European Parliament, Commission and Council negotiators reached on 1st October, a political agreement on a tyre labelling system similar to that used for domestic appliances. The consumer will be provided with both environment and safety related information.

ETRMA and its 12 leading tyre corporate members fully support and welcome the objective of the mandatory tyre performance information requirement.

All new car, van and truck tyres produced after July 2012 and on sale in EU from November 2012, will have to be classified and labelled for fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise performance. The label shall provide ratings of these tyre performances allowing consumers to compare the relative performance level between tyres. The label will also provide external rolling noise measurement in decibels.
The European co-legislators have fully acknowledged the need for balanced approach on the kind of tyre performances on which information has to be given, by designing an integrated label, which provides both environmental (fuel efficiency and noise levels) as well as safety (wet braking) information.

The review that will be performed 40 months after the rules come into play will have to validate whether or not the Regulation targets have been reached, in particular about the relevance and effectiveness of the communication tools which are proposed today.

ETRMA will accompany the Commission efforts in completing the technical requirements in the months to come.
