Reacting to recent accusations against High Representative Josep Borrell for his decision to send a diplomatic mission to Caracas and pressure from the conservatives and liberal group in the European Parliament to add a debate on the topic to the agenda of next week’s plenary session,

Kati Piri, vice-president for foreign affairs, stated:

“We stand by the High Representative and vice-president of the Commission Josep Borrell and his efforts to find a peaceful and democratic solution to the deep political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela through dialogue. This is the only way out of this dramatic crisis.”

Javi López, co-president of Eurolat, stated:

“The decision to send a mission to Venezuela is backed by a mandate of the Council of Foreign Affairs Ministers and coordinated with the International Contact Group. We welcome all efforts to find a peaceful and democratic solution in Venezuela. While some seem to be expecting a potential military intervention in the country, we believe that there is no alternative to diplomatic dialogue.”

Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, S&D spokesperson on Eurolat, stated:

“After 13 European Parliament resolutions on Venezuela alone in 5 years, the conservatives and liberals in the Parliament have blocked even a single debate on the humanitarian tragedy caused be the Covid-19 pandemic in Latin America, which speaks volumes and de-masks their hypocrisy. The Spanish conservatives and liberals are abusing the European Parliament as an arena for their domestic political battles. The political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela can only be solved through dialogue.”
