Following the adoption of conclusions on the Middle East Peace Process by the Foreign Affairs Council, which recalls its willingness to engage further with regional partners on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative, MEP Hilde Vautmans (Open VLD, Belgium), ALDE spokesperson on the Middle East Peace Process, welcomes the outcome of the Foreign Affairs Council but says we need a united European position on how to address this issue:

Vautman_NEW.jpeg"We have to stay optimistic, but a certain degree of frankness in the debate is now needed. We can feel there is a willingness from the Member States to support the European Union as an honest broker. But our High Representative, Federica Mogherini, needs a clear mandate from the Council to take the lead in the negotiation process.  A lasting peace is what we all want, and that's why we continue to strive for the best possible conditions for a possible European Peace Initiative. Given the regional developments, we have to stay involved closely, in the interest of the people of the region and of our European interests."

The ALDE Group has asked several times for a European Peace Initiative in the Middle East and for a pro-active diplomatic approach in the region. In this respect, our Group will organize a public hearing on the 2nd of March on the initiative of ALDE MEPs Hilde Vautmans and Javier Nart, called “Israel and Palestine: A European Peace Initiative for the Middle East”. One of the speakers confirmed in the debate is Fernando Gentilini, EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process.
