Ahead of Sunday’s elections in Brazil, and one month after her meeting with presidential candidate and former President Lula da Silva, today the president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez, announced the joint signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the S&D Group, the Party of the European Socialists (PES) and Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT).

The memorandum, signed by Iratxe García, together with PES president Sergei Stanishev, and the president of the Partido dos Trabalhadores, Gleisi Hoffmann, aims at strengthening the links and coordinating political positions on common global issues such as democracy, human rights, social justice, equality and solidarity for just, sustainable and inclusive societies.”

Iratxe García said:

“The future of Brazil is crucial, not only for the life of all Brazilian citizens but also for all of South America, for Europe, and for a healthy multilateral system. The right-wing and populistic measures of Bolsonaro have undermined not only Brazilian democracy but have also increased poverty and inequalities. They have also impeded the global fight against the climate emergency and the protection of the Amazonia.

“We are ready to work with the Partido dos Trabalhadores with a shared agenda based on our common values and goals. We want strong democratic institutions, solid multilateral rules and policies that put people ahead of financial interests.”

Iratxe García: "Os progressistas na UE e no Brasil devem trabalhar em conjunto para combater o populismo de direita e reduzir as desigualdades".

Antes das eleições de domingo no Brasil e um mês após o seu encontro com o candidato presidencial e ex-presidente Lula da Silva, a presidente dos Socialistas e Democratas no Parlamento Europeu, Iratxe García Pérez, anunciou hoje a assinatura de um memorando de cooperação entre o Grupo S&D, o Partido dos Socialistas Europeus (PES) e o Partido dos Trabalhadores do Brasil (PT).

O documento, assinado por Iratxe García, juntamente com o presidente do PES, Sergei Stanishev, e a presidente do Partido dos Trabalhadores, Gleisi Hoffmann, visa reforçar os laços e coordenar posições políticas sobre questões globais comuns como a democracia, direitos humanos, justiça social, igualdade e solidariedade, para sociedades mais justas, sustentáveis e inclusivas".

Iratxe García disse:

"O futuro do Brasil é crucial não só para a vida de todos os cidadãos brasileiros, mas também para toda a América do Sul, para a Europa, e para um sistema multilateral saudável. As medidas de direita e populistas de Bolsonaro minaram não só a democracia brasileira como também aumentaram a pobreza e as desigualdades. Também prejudicaram a luta global contra a emergência climática e a proteção da Amazónia.

"Estamos prontos a trabalhar com o Partido dos Trabalhadores com uma agenda partilhada baseada nos nossos valores e objectivos comuns. Queremos instituições democráticas fortes, regras e políticas multilaterais sólidas que coloquem as pessoas à frente dos interesses financeiros".
