Tomorrow, EU heads of government will meet to address pressing matters that affect the lives of European citizens and businesses. The leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García, today urged leaders to be brave and look for European solutions for our common challenges.
Ahead of the European Council meeting (EUCO), Iratxe García said:
“I hope that national leaders understand that these crises will not fade away. We are living in rapidly changing times and in a state of multiple crises, so we need to be better prepared to react. This demands vision and commitment to our policies, and investments to make our societies and our economic system more resilient.
“This Council meeting is a missed opportunity to start ambitious reforms and to build up our crisis resilience. Our Group has been calling for a permanent fiscal capacity - a new investment instrument, based on the success of SURE and RRF - to be able to react in times of crisis and for our citizens and companies to have a buffer that can cushion new blows. The Council and the Commission should be working more closely with this Parliament to move forward.
“At EUCO they will also address migration. This should be the time to finally adopt a new Migration and Asylum Pact that is in line with the values of human dignity and solidarity stated in our treaties. The Parliament is ready to work on it, and I hope the Council is too.”
