New International Report Details Ethanol’s Improving Environmental Benefits Warns Against Policy Making that Ignores Future Innovations
March 31, 2009 - Ottawa – The Global Renewable Fuels Alliance (GRFA) will be hosting a media conference call on Wednesday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. EST with the author of a new report from the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Bioenergy Task 39 on the carbon profile of ethanol.
The report, “An Examination of the Potential for Improving Carbon/Energy Balance of Bioethanol,” found that greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions from ethanol compared to gasoline have improved from 26% in 1995 to 39% today. Further, the report predicts GHG reductions will reach 55% by 2015. In addition, the report predicts an ever-improving energy balance for ethanol as farming and ethanol production technologies advance.

The report was authored by Don O’Connor. O’Connor is the President of S&T Squared Consultants Inc. and the developer of the GHGenius model used for this report.
