The European Parliament today adopted the report on Fundamental  rights in the European Union in 2009.

MEP Marie Christine Vergiat, coordinator for the GUE/NGL in the LIBE Committee said:
"For us it is an important report because it draws the consequences of one of the few positive aspects of the Lisbon Treaty if it is effectively implemented."
"The implementation of fundamental rights in the EU is an important issue, fundamental to the future of the EU."
"The Treaty, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and accession to the ECHR, can provide us with many tools in this area and allow the EU and its Member States to enter a new phase.
Many say that human rights are among the core values of the European Union. Linked as they are to the credibility of the EU and its foreign policy, they must be applied effectively as universal and indivisible.
