The Single European Sky is eventually becoming a reality. The vote on the Regulation in the Transport Committee today lays down rules for the creation and effective functioning of the Single European Sky, in order to ensure current air-traffic safety standards. As requested by the S&D Group, it will also contribute to the sustainable development of air transport systems and to improving the overall performance of air traffic management and air navigation services, in line with targets on climate, the environment and social rights.

The S&D shadow rapporteur, Bogusław Liberadzki MEP, said:

“Thanks to the solid support from transport committee members, the European Parliament is ready to restart the negotiations with the Council on this file. We strongly believe that the Single European Sky should be implemented quickly and the adoption of this legislation is really needed to bring more harmonisation and common European standards and procedures between member states. After the Covid crisis, we are ready to boost economic and environmental efficiency in European aviation.”

The S&D coordinator in the transport committee, Johan Danielsson MEP, added:

“After years of reluctance from the Council’s side to start discussing the file, the Parliament finally managed to reopen the dossier to improve our Single European Sky.

“We managed to protect social standard and working conditions in the sector, allowing member states to apply restricted conditions in case of further market openness.”
