Citizens, and particularly youth representatives, will discuss how to strengthen equal opportunities with high-level guest speakers including EU Commission vice-president, Frans Timmermans responsible for the European Green Deal, EU Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, and former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

Participants also include S&D MEPs Robert Biedroń and Evelyn Regner, Polish MPs Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk, Beata Maciejewska and Krzysztof Śmiszek, as well as the mayor of Świdnica City, Beata Moskal-Słaniewska, vice-president of Global.Lab, Adam Traczyk, and journalist Jacek Żakowski. There will be a press conference by the co-leaders of Nowa Lewica with Robert Biedroń and Włodzimierz Czarzasty and former president of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski at 13:40.

S&D MEP Robert Biedroń, chair of the EP’s women’s rights and gender equality committee, and co-leader of the New Left (Nowa Lewica) said:

“Europe can and must be a better place for everyone! In Today’s Europe, women, LGBT, and people living in rural areas still do not have equal rights and opportunities. No matter who we are or where we come from in Europe, we should all be enjoying the same rights and opportunities in life. This is the most basic value on which our Union was built and we should never give it up.

“I could not imagine a better place than Wrocław to co-host our event on how to strengthen equal opportunities. Wrocław is not only one of the most youth-oriented cities in Poland, but also one the most open, diverse and inclusive cities in Poland, amid an unprecedented wave of immigrants.

“We will meet on 4th June, the celebrated ‘Day of Freedom and Citizens’ Rights’ in Poland, in memory of the 4th June 1989 elections that were the symbol of the beginning of democratic changes in many countries of Central and Eastern Europe who later joined the European Union.

“The S&D Group has always been the champion of equality and for a united Europe that fights against all forms of discrimination and supports and protects people who face it.

“We are also at the forefront of promoting energy independence and the ambitious goal to make Europe the first carbon neutral continent by 2050. Everyone has the right to a clean environment. But climate and energy transition must firstly be just, meaning no one and no region must be left behind.”
