Batteries will play a critical role in supporting the European Green Deal and enabling the ‘Green Recovery’

On 5 June, EUROBAT launched its “Battery Innovation Roadmap 2030” at a webinar, attended by around 300 persons, featuring Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and MEP Claudia Gamon, alongside EUROBAT’s, Marc Zoellner, Christian Rosenkranz and Bernhard Riegel.

In the official welcome, Marc Zoellner – EUROBAT President and CEO of the Hoppecke Group concluded: “We need an industrial policy that recognises all battery technologies and the jobs they create in the EU, which has to be taken into account by the EU Commission and Parliament when finalising the new Batteries Regulation.”

Executive Vice President Timmermans, during his keynote speech, discussed the crucial role of batteries in addressing the challenges of the European Green Deal and ‘green recovery’. He continued to praise the role of the European battery industry in creating innovative solutions to the demands of sustainability. He called on the industry to work together with him and policy-makers to construct a legislative framework that supports innovation, sustainability, competitiveness, resilience and growth.

The Roadmap demonstrates the strong innovation potential of all battery technologies over the next years to cater for the specific requirements of a multitude of applications. As an essential technology contributing to decarbonisation across a number of sectors, including transport, energy, logistics, production and telecommunications, batteries will play a crucial role in supporting the European Green Deal and enabling the ‘green recovery’ from the COVID-19 pandemic.

All battery technologies, with their specific features and significant development potential, are required to harness the full potential of the European battery industry to contribute to achieving Europe’s 2050 climate-neutrality goals and power the specific requirements of different applications.

After the presentation of the Battery Innovation Roadmap 2030 White Paper, Christian Rosenkranz – EUROBAT Technical Cluster Leader and Clarios Vice President Industry & Government Relations EMEA, concluded as follows:

Embracing the full mix of battery technologies is imperative for the European battery industry to meet future market demand, estimated to be three times today’s market by volume in 2030, and will also provide Europe with strategic advantages in terms of competitiveness and self-sufficiency in material sourcing and manufacturing.”

It was finally to MEP Claudia Gamon to wrap up the event with the second key note speech on energy storage in the EU. She concluded her speech on the topic of chemicals: “We need an evidence-based approach to chemicals and to work on standards to manage them in a sustainable way.”
