Estonia’s national Transmission System Operator (TSO) for electricity and natural gas, Elering, has become the latest member of European Network for Cyber Security (ENCS), helping to strengthen the energy sector’s cyber defences.

Elering is responsible for the functioning of the Estonian electricity system, ensuring the required standard of electricity supply to consumers at all times. For this purpose, Elering manages and develops both the national transmission grid and international interconnections.

“Elering acknowledges that cyber security is increasingly important for critical energy infrastructure,” said Elering CEO Taavi Veskimägi. “We are confident that the deep insight provided by ENCS will help us achieve our goals.”

ENCS already works with a wide variety of utilities across Europe, sharing knowledge and expertise, collaborating on capacity building and conducting security tests and training.

“After our initial focus on DSOs, we took the initiative to establish and grow ENCS, we are now rapidly extending our collaboration and focus to the TSO domain where issues like cross-border risks and DER security can be even more imminent,” stated Anjos Nijk, Managing Director at ENCS. “We are excited that the innovative Elering is now further strengthening our community, enabling further harmonisation and faster capacity building to enhance Europe’s energy grid resilience”.

“We are happy that Elering joins ENCS,” said Laurent Schmitt, Secretary General of ENTSO-E. “ENTSO-E has a good history of collaboration with ENCS in our security training program, joint cybersecurity events and collaboration in European projects aiming at preparing the Network Code Cybersecurity. Solving grid cybersecurity issues is really complex rocket science requiring to develop cross functional collaboration.”
