In the aftermath of the Taliban’s seizure of Kabul, the European Left calls the European Union to act immediately to safeguards the life and the dignity of Afghan people, especially for women and girls facing the dangers coming after the Taliban takeover.
Looking forward to the humanitarian catastrophe that stems from the collapse of the Afghan government, the European Left calls the international community and the EU to immediately open humanitarian corridors and to effectively guaranteeing asylum to those who want to leave the country.
Today, indeed, we can only be outraged at the declaration from the US administration and President Joe Biden justifying the pullout by mentioning "American interests" in Afghanistan. There are no doubts about the role of the US in this crisis, just as there are no doubts about the fact that the concept of humanitarian war is just a vile lie.
We have seen the images of Afghan families desperately trying to flee the country and find a safe place, in fear for their lives after the reports of reprisal killing. It sadly confirms that are always the civilians who pay the highest price of warfare. We will firmly stand by the Afghan population against the failure of NATO policy and of the US' four-decade military intervention.
Heinz Bierbaum, President of the European Left
