ECI DAY 2014: Building up success

on Tuesday 15 April – 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

at EESC headquarters, Rue Belliard/Belliardstraat 99, Brussels

The event will focus on the ECI campaign, the political challenges it poses, its legal constraints and e-democracy. EESC members, ECI campaigners and independent researchers will meet with experts from public institutions, civil society organisations and think-tanks to discuss the progress and detours of the ECI so far, lessons learned, and possible improvements and recommendations for future initiatives. For the first time we will have the pleasure of hearing the views of European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly on the ECIs and those of a representative of the Data Protection Supervisor.

A modern Europe requires modern governance and the direct involvement of the electorate in the work of their representatives.  By allowing citizens to express their priorities, ECIs can help the EU to focus more on issues of real importance to its people.  The EESC is and wishes to remain the conduit for each and every one of these individual voices.

The results and recommendations from this conference will be made available on the ECI DAY 2014 website a few days after the event.

The ECI Day 2014 is organised by the European Economic and Social Committee in partnership with: Committee of the Regions, European Citizens Action Service, Democracy International, Initiative and Referendum Institute Europe, The ECI Campaign, EurActiv and Euronews.
