CEN and CENELEC hold First European Standardization Summit ‘Towards a sustainable economy’ in Albena, Bulgaria, on 7 June 2012

‘Towards a sustainable economy’ is the theme of the First European Standardization Summit, which takes place in Albena, Bulgaria, on 7 June 2012. The Summit is organised by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), and hosted by the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization (BDS).

The Summit will be opened by Mr Kristian VIGENIN, Member of the European Parliament and Co-Chair of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. The theme ‘Towards a sustainable economy’ will be introduced by Mr Will DAY, Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership, who was the Chairman of the United Kingdom’s Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) from 2009 until 2011.

The programme includes a panel discussion which will focus on the contribution that standardization can make to achieving key policy objectives including energy efficiency, environmental responsibility and waste management.  This discussion will take into account the policy and legislative framework at European and international levels.

Relevant issues will be addressed by high-level speakers including:

• Dr Boris ALESHIN, President of ISO (International Organization for Standardization)

• Dr Klaus WUCHERER, President of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)

• Mr David DOSSETT, CENELEC President (representing CEN and CENELEC)

• Mr Dirk WEILER, Chairman of the ETSI General Assembly (European Telecommunications Standards Institute)

• Mr Freek VAN EIJK, Director of Strategy and Public Affairs of SITA Northern Europe Waste Services (part of the GDF SUEZ Group)

Following the discussion, the Summit will be wrapped-up by Mr Friedrich SMAXWIL, President of CEN and Chairman of the Presidential Committee of CEN and CENELEC.

The First European Standardization Summit will be attended by some 150 delegates including representatives of national, European and international standards organisations, business and industry, the European Commission, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), national governments and public authorities, as well as societal stakeholders including consumer and environmental organisations.

The Summit will take place at the Albena Congress Centre in Albena, Bulgaria, on 7 June 2012.  The same venue will also host the 52nd CENELEC General Assembly (on 5 June) and the 38th CEN General Assembly (on 6 June).
