MEPs on the EP constitutional affairs committee today voted on proposals to change the European Union’s institutional framework and processes laid out in the EU Treaties. For the S&D Group, amending the Treaties is about strengthening the EU's capacity to improve people’s everyday lives.
Leading the negotiations for the S&D Group, Gaby Bischoff made sure that the proposals are based on citizens’ recommendations in the Conference on the Future of Europe. Furthermore, the proposals will ensure the EU is better placed to face recent challenges like health pandemics and the impact of Russia's war on Ukraine.
Following today's EP committee vote, the proposals will be voted by the plenary in the November session (20-23 November).
Gaby Bischoff, S&D vice-president and negotiator on EU Treaty change, said:
“The constitutional affairs committee has come up with proposals to improve the EU Treaties, and today we are sending a clear signal to the Council that now it’s time to open a Convention and strengthen Europe's capacity to act in areas like democracy, social justice and health.
“These proposals have been carefully thought out and stem from citizens’ recommendations in the Conference on the Future of Europe, and now we are acting on their recommendations. We are also responding to the challenges that the EU has faced in recent years, such as the pandemic and the impact of Russia's war against Ukraine. The EU needs to be properly equipped to deal with today's world and improving the Treaties will ensure the EU is better placed to support people in times of crisis.
“Finally, across Europe, we are witnessing the rise of right-wing nationalist parties and they all have one thing in common: they want to undermine and undo the EU. By improving the Treaties, we can secure Europe's future and deliver better results for European citizens.”
