From 5 - 9 November 2018, ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) participated in the third European Vocational Skills Week, organised by the European Commission and the Austrian Presidency, to show the value of vocational and educational training (VET) at all stages in life. At the event, ACCA also signed its pledge to the European Alliance for Apprenticeships.
This year’s European Vocational Skills Week, officially opened by Marianne Thyssen, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, took place for the first time outside of Brussels in Vienna, Austria, with one central theme running throughout the whole week: “Vocational and educational training (VET) and the future of work: jobs and skills”.
Thanks to 1,512 events that took place across Europe, the campaign has so far reached over 2.2 million people, and many more associated activities and events are being organised across Europe until December 2018.
The overarching aim of this event was to show the value of VET at all stages in life, be it to obtain an initial qualification, to re-qualify or retrain later in life as an adult. As a global professional body, this VET event is an important forum for ACCA, and was used by ACCA as an opportunity to actively engage with employers, learning professionals and agencies from all over Europe to share best practice and drive forward the VET agenda.

During the European Vocational Skills Week, the European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) - which brings governments together with key stakeholders in the field of VET training with a focus on quality, offer, image and mobility - celebrated its fifth anniversary. Earlier this year, ACCA made a pledge to support for Apprenticeships in order to join this platform. ACCA’s application was successful and, as part of the newcomer ceremony, ACCA was invited on stage to sign its pledge.
John Cunningham, ACCA’s regional head of education, Europe and Americas said: ‘The overarching aim of the European Vocational Skills Week 2018 is very close to ACCA’s heart, and fully in line with ACCA’s core activity, and I was delighted to represent ACCA during the newcomer ceremony. We join EAfA alongside 36 national commitments to the goals of the Alliance and around 250 other organisations across Europe - including Porsche, Hyatt, BMW, the Welsh Government, Nestle, Bosch, Tesco Europe, REPSOL and Adecco – thereby demonstrating that we are very serious about Apprenticeships.’

Future editions of the European Vocational Skills Week will take place in Finland next year, and in principle Germany the year after - the Council Presidency countries for the next Vocational Skills Weeks.
