Nach 40 Tagen Hungerstreik musste Nasrin Sotoudeh vergangene Woche in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert werden. Die Menschenrechtsanwältin* ist 2018 zum zweiten Mal inhaftiert worden, diesmal mit dem Vorwurf der Verschwörung gegen die iranische Staatsführung. Sie wurde zu 38 Jahren Haft und 148 Peitschenhieben verurteilt.

The S&D Group in the European Parliament condemns the new crackdown on the Turkish HDP party, following the news that Ankara prosecutors have decided to detain 82 people in seven provinces under an investigation into the unrest in 2014, known as 6-7 October events. Among the detainees are former deputy and HDP mayor of the city of Kars Ayhan Bilgen, former HDP deputies Ayla Akat Ata, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Altan Tan, Nazmi Gür, Emine Beyza Üstün and Emine Ayna, and Alp Altınörs, a member of the party’s Central Executive Board. 

The transition to adulthood and independent living is a challenging time for many young people. Thankfully, most have their families to fall back on when life doesn’t go exactly to plan. Young people who have grown up in public care usually don’t have that luxury. And too often state support is removed, or cut back when a young person turns 18. The consequences can be devastating not only for the young people involved but for society as a whole.
