An unacceptable denial of democracy

Date

Thu, 02/03/2011

Statement by GUE/NGL MEPs Patrick Le Hyaric and Cornelia Ernst

"Last December, the European Parliament rejected the proposal for a directive on the Single application for work and residence, which puts European workers in competition with those from countries outside the EU.

"We strongly disapprove of what amounts to a denial of parliamentary democracy by taking away from the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs its co-responsibility for this issue because, from now on, the only Committee considered to be in charge is the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

"The forcing through of this decision by rapporteur Véronique Mathieu is unacceptable. It shows how little the conservative European right cares about votes which oppose its destructive logic for wages, working conditions and welfare of workers, no matter where they come from."
