Sakharov Prize: European Parliament honours detained journalists and those in conflict zones
Date
As the awards ceremony of the 2025 Sakharov Prize takes place today, the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament pay tribute to its laureates and finalists, celebrating their extraordinary courage in defending freedom, democracy, and human rights.
In an era marked by increasing global backsliding of the rule of law and democratic values, the recognition of these brave individuals is more relevant and urgent than ever. The S&D Group proudly stands in solidarity with the entire "Sakharov community" – a united family of human rights defenders whose bravery inspires millions.
Yannis Maniatis, S&D vice-president for foreign affairs, said:
“This year’s Sakharov laureates – Andrzej Poczobut and Mzia Amaglobeli, courageous journalists imprisoned in Belarus and Georgia – deserve our highest recognition. Journalism is the foundation of every free and democratic society.
“May this prize also highlight the plight of journalists and humanitarian aid workers in Palestine and all conflict zones, represented by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), the Palestine Red Crescent Society, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Nominated by the S&D Group, these finalists represent the extraordinary human cost borne by those who report truth and protect civilians in areas of unimaginable danger. Their essential role in defending human dignity and humanitarian principles is paramount.
“The crisis in Gaza has seen an unprecedented number of casualties, with more than 200 journalists and over 500 humanitarian workers killed while continuing to risk their lives every day. The S&D Group firmly supports the urgent call for the protection of these vital actors, asserting that they must never be targets in conflict zones.”
Note to editors on finalists nominated by other political groups:
Andrzej Poczobut and Mzia Amaglobeli (2025 Sakharov Prize Winners)
The Sakharov Prize honours imprisoned journalists who defend our freedom with extraordinary courage. The S&D Group reiterates its call for the immediate release of laureates Andrzej Poczobut (imprisoned in Belarus) and Mzia Amaglobeli (Georgia), and all journalists detained worldwide. Currently, more than 500 journalists are imprisoned globally. Journalism is not a crime; it is a vital pillar of democracy.
A cross-party group of members, including many S&D MEPs, nominated these candidates.
Serbian students (other finalists)
The S&D Group also welcomed courageous Serbian students Milica Marjanović and Dimitrije Dimić, whose peaceful resistance has inspired citizens far beyond their campuses. Their movement serves as a powerful reminder that democracy is strengthened when young people raise their voices with integrity and determination, representing hope for Serbia’s democratic future.
